Purpose

TRC Inc. is seeking an engineering technician for mechanical design, fabrication, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of test equipment that will be used in automotive research testing.  Engineering technicians provide semi-professional technical support for engineers supporting in such areas as research programs, equipment design, test development, and testing. This position focuses heavily on mechanical and test equipment fabrication that may also require the use of digital data acquisition equipment.  The engineering technician may be asked to analyze test data acquired, including the ability to identify patterns and relationships among data channels that may be meaningful, then reporting these observations.  Engineering technician should possess a strong and practical understanding of motor vehicles, systems, and equipment in addition to fabrication and machining equipment.

 

Essential Functions*

  • Machining, Fabrication and bench test automation
  • Read and interpret drawings
  • Assemble, repair, and troubleshoot equipment and support systems
  • Provide technical support to project teams
  • Hands on mechanical and welding experience
  • Experience with vehicle safety systems

Other Duties and Responsibilities (Non-Essential Functions)

  • Coordinate project schedule changes and scope of work with project teams
  • Assist in presentation and report preparation
  • Assemble or install equipment or parts requiring simple wiring, soldering, or connecting
  • Conduct a variety of tests, prepares test scenarios, adjusts and operates equipment
  • Follow set up procedures and conduct tests using established methods as well as creative methods
  • Develop creative solutions to technical problems
  • Follow safety procedures; wear protective equipment including safety glasses and steel-toed shoes
  • Assists in design modifications
  • Support TRC Inc.’s Quality and EH&S (Environmental, Health, and Safety) efforts

 

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma is required
  • Associate’s degree in a mechanical engineering technology and/or electronic discipline is preferred
  • Recognized certification(s) and minimum five years related experience or 10 years demonstrated expertise in applied disciplines is preferred
  • Practical knowledge and experience of vehicle testing applications
  • Practical knowledge of science or engineering
  • Proficient in the use of test equipment and/or tools and machinery
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic computer skills

 

Working conditions

  • Standard office, climate controlled environment
  • May be exposed to temperatures below 0 degree and above 95 degrees
  • May be exposed to inclement weather
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as gas, oil, and paint

 

Physical requirements

  • Ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
  • Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers
  • Capable of positioning one’s self into bending, stretching, climbing, or awkward positions
