TRC Inc. is seeking an engineering technician for mechanical design, fabrication, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of test equipment that will be used in automotive research testing.  Engineering technicians provide semi-professional technical support for engineers supporting in such areas as research programs, equipment design, test development, and testing. This position focuses heavily on mechanical and test automation that involves the use of digital data acquisition equipment.  The engineering technician must be able to understand the types of data being collected, recognize when equipment is not functioning correctly, and repair as necessary. The engineering technician will process data to assure it is delivered to the customer per specific requirements. The engineering technician must be able to analyze test data acquired, including the ability to identify patterns and relationships among data channels that may be meaningful, then reporting these observations.  Engineering technician should possess a strong and practical understanding of motor vehicles, systems, and equipment. This position may require working in a variety of environments such as: in-vehicle dynamic testing, laboratory testing, outside testing in inclement weather, and at off-site locations that will require interaction with the public.


Essential Functions*

  • Perform static vehicle testing, including test set up, execution, automation, data collection, data processing, data analysis, and reporting
  • Perform dynamic vehicle testing, including test set up, execution, troubleshooting, data collection, data processing, data analysis, and reporting
  • Machining, Fabrication and bench test automation
  • Assemble, repair, and troubleshoot test equipment and support systems
  • Provide technical support to project teams
  • Hands on mechanical and welding experience
  • Experience with vehicle safety systems

Other Duties and Responsibilities (Non-Essential Functions)

  • Assist in the development of proposals and plans for test equipment troubleshooting and testing
  • Coordinate project schedule changes and scope of work with project teams
  • Assist in presentation and report preparation
  • Assemble or install equipment or parts requiring simple wiring, soldering, or connecting
  • Record test data
  • Conduct a variety of tests, prepares test scenarios, adjusts and operates equipment
  • Follow set up procedures and conduct tests using established methods as well as creative methods
  • Develop creative solutions to technical problems
  • Follow safety procedures; wear protective equipment including safety glasses and steel-toed shoes
  • Assists in design modifications
  • Extracts and compiles engineering data and identifies errors or inconsistencies
  • Support TRC Inc.’s Quality and EH&S (Environmental, Health, and Safety) efforts



  • High school diploma is required
  • Associate’s degree in a mechanical engineering technology and/or electronic discipline is preferred
  • Recognized certification(s) and minimum five years related experience or 10 years demonstrated expertise in applied disciplines is preferred
  • Practical knowledge and experience of vehicle testing applications
  • Practical knowledge of science or engineering
  • Proficient in the use of test equipment and/or tools and machinery
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Proficient in the use of instrumentation and data acquisition equipment


Working conditions

  • Standard office, climate controlled environment
  • May be exposed to temperatures below 0 degree and above 95 degrees
  • May be exposed to inclement weather
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as gas, oil, and paint


Physical requirements

  • Ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
  • Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers
  • Capable of positioning one’s self into bending, stretching, climbing, or awkward positions
