The biomechanics group at TRC Inc. is seeking an engineering technician for the crash test dummy laboratory. In addition to maintaining, preparing, and qualifying dummies for testing, this lab also assists in the development and evaluation of new crash test dummies and procedures. Engineering technicians provide semi-professional technical support for engineers supporting in such areas as research programs, equipment design, test development, and testing. This engineering technician would be responsible for dummy assembly and repair, instrumentation calibration and repair, test setup and execution, troubleshooting, and data collection, processing, and reporting.


Essential Functions*

  • Perform dummy qualification tests, including test set up, execution, troubleshooting, data collection, data processing, data analysis, and reporting
  • Set up, monitor, operate, and maintain test equipment
  • Calibrate and repair instrumentation
  • Assemble, repair, and troubleshoot crash test dummies
  • Provide technical support to project teams

Other Duties and Responsibilities (Non-Essential Functions)

  • Assist in the development of proposals and plans for research programs
  • Coordinate project schedule changes and scope of work with project teams
  • Control and monitor cost, progress, and quality of assigned projects
  • Assist in presentation and report preparation
  • Assemble or install equipment or parts requiring simple wiring, soldering, or connecting
  • Record test data
  • Conduct a variety of tests, prepares test specimens, adjusts and operates equipment, and records test data
  • Follow set up procedures and conduct tests using established methods
  • Develop creative solutions to technical problems
  • Follow safety procedures; wear protective equipment including safety glasses and steel-toed shoes
  • Assists in design modifications
  • Extracts and compiles engineering data and identifies errors or inconsistencies
  • Support TRC Inc.’s Quality and EH&S (Environmental, Health, and Safety) efforts




  • High school diploma is required
  • Associate’s degree in a technology discipline is preferred
  • Recognized certification(s) and minimum five years related experience or 10 years demonstrated expertise in applied disciplines is preferred
  • Practical knowledge and experience of electronics applications
  • Practical knowledge of science or engineering
  • Proficient in the use of test equipment and/or tools and machinery
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Proficient in the use of instrumentation and data acquisition equipment


Working conditions

  • Standard office, climate controlled environment
  • May be exposed to temperatures below 0 degree and above 95 degrees
  • May be exposed to inclement weather
  • May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, such as gas, oil, and paint


Physical requirements

  • Ability to move objects weighing up to 50 pounds
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment
  • Ability to communicate with customers and co-workers
  • Capable of positioning one’s self into bending, stretching, climbing, or awkward positions
